How to Develop a Winning Attitude

By Tinukemi Olaoye Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered why some people excel at what they do and other people just seem to shuffle along?

There are several factors that determine the success and advancement of a person’s career, and many of these factors are underlying and may not easily be seen or determined.

One of such underlying factors is a person’s attitude.

Your attitude is a very real and very powerful thing. On one hand, your attitude will affect your work and spill over into the results, and on the other hand, your attitude will affect you personally. You may be constantly upset, moody and dissatisfied, or you may be inspired, motivated and energized.

The good news is that you have the ability to control, monitor and change your attitude. You’re a living being and you always have a choice. Here are some ways to help you develop an excellent, winning attitude at work:

Take charge of your career. Many people have a negative attitude at work because they don’t really like or enjoy the work they do. Well, if you do not like the nature of your work or its incidents, you can change the dissatisfying components. This change may not be immediate, but you can create a plan and work towards something better for you. Knowing that you have some form of control over your career can help with your attitude.

Realise that you are a problem solver. Another reason why some people may nurse negative attitudes at work is that they do not appreciate the role they are playing at work. Take the time to understand that you’re solving a direct problem, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. Imagine what would happen in the business or workplace if you were not there to do what you usually do; chances are that things could get quite chaotic and the resulting effect could be really serious. You matter and you’re needed where you are right now.

Take ownership of your role. When you understand that you are solving a problem of some sort, the obvious next thing to do is to take ownership of your role. Really fill your seat. Assume your position. Own that work. Throw yourself into the role and perform your task with gusto. Have the ‘things-must-not-go-wrong-on-my-watch’ mentality. Take the responsibility and make it truly yours.

Whether you work as an employee or you’re self-employed, the attitude you bring to your work will determine what you get out of it and the person you become through it.
